History: Athena's life started out as good as it could. Although she never knew her father, ever since she could remember her mother was always there for her. She taught her how to sing, gave her books on Gallifreyan history and all kinds of other species, and took care of her no matter what. She taught her to be strong, and to not show anyone any sort of weakness. Perhaps not the best lesson for a child, but it helped Athena throughout her early life.
Athena's mother, who went by Lorelai, was an artist, and her father had been a genius, and so Athena inherited both of these traits, which led her to become a rather shy but very smart child, though this caused most of the other children to laugh at her. Lorelai told her that to be unique was not only okay, but rather it was beautiful. This didn't really help when Athena was being chased around after school, but it kept her sane at least. On the birthday just before Athena started attending the academy, Lorelai told her daughter that her gift was a TARDIS - the only thing, in fact, remaining of her father. But Athena had to promise she would stay and finish the academy before she took it anywhere. Of course she went for a joy ride or two - how else would she learn to pilot it? - but her mother never found out, and Athena had already pledged to finish the academy anyway.
The first day at academy, however, is burned into Athena's memory not because of it being a joyful day, but rather it being one of the worst of her life. She finished all her classes, practically buzzing with excitement at all the new things there were to learn, but as she stumbled into her house, she came across her mother being pressed against a wall by another man. Furious, Athena barreled towards him and jumped on his back, doing whatever she could to get him away from Lorelai. But he fought back, not caring how young Athena was, and beat both women until they were both teetering on death's door. He fled, never to be seen again. Lorelai crawled over to her daughter, and whispered. "I'm so sorry. This is all my fault. I promise I won't let you die..." Athena passed out after that.
When she awoke, she was surprised to find that she was still the same, and hadn't regenerated. She asked the nurses what happened, and none of them could meet her eye as they told her that Lorelai was dead. She hadn't regenerated, because Lorelai had given Athena her regeneration energy. But she gave away everything she had, and died. They asked her how many faces Lorelai had left before she passed. Four; and now those four were added onto Athena's life, meaning she had a total of 16 regenerations not including her child body. They told her that Lorelai was a hero, that she not only saved her daughter's life but prolonged it. "I never wanted that!" Athena had screamed, as tears spilled down her cheeks. "I wanted my mom!"
Most people avoided her after that. The whispers followed her around the academy, of the girl with extra regenerations, the girl who's mother died. They never found the culprit, although they had a fair idea on who it was as mere minutes after the attack, a TARDIS had disappeared. He was never to return.
The rest of her academy life was good, despite the circumstances, and Athena was always cheerful, bubbly, energetic. That made people find her very annoying, but she didn't care. She had so many new ideas brewing in her mind that she eventually decided that she didn't mind being alone. She graduated with flying colours, and was offered a seat on the council due to her extensive skills. However, after a few months of this, she began to hate the council and everything they stood for. They said that Gallifreyans should not interfere, but how could they not, when people were in danger and they could stop it? She voiced these thoughts at a meeting, and was instantly kicked off.
Feeling that she had nothing else to stay here for, she took her father's TARDIS and began exploring the cosmos, just as she had always wanted. She saved a few planets, met some amazing people, saw things that she thought were only possible in fiction. Even though her family was lost, Athena got to a point where she was happy again.
That was, until one day where she might have understood why time lords don't intervene in human affairs.
It was the middle of World War 2. Athena knew she couldn't change anything huge because it was a fixed point, but she was determined to help at least a few of the people suffering down there. She landed, hid her TARDIS, and went on her way. She was caught instantly by soldiers, thrown into a cellar, and tortured because they were determined she was spying on them for the other side. They kept her there for three long years, and the torture (both mental and physical) didn't stop. They never killed her, thankfully, for if they knew what she could do they would try to use her as a weapon, or worse. Finally, she managed to escape back to her TARDIS and fly far, far away from Earth.
Since then, Athena has been a little cold-hearted and guarded, not trusting anyone and trying to play the mean girl to push people away. Despite this front, she can't resist helping others or going on adventures, and it's in these moments that you will briefly glimpse the old Athena - happy, bubbly, caring.
RP Sample: Athena checked her watch. 2 minutes to go. She pulled her hood a little lower across her face and looked around. The streets of this planet far, far away from home were bustling with people, none of whom really caught Athena's interest. She was here for a purpose - and she'd carry that out. She wasn't allowing herself to get distracted. She began to walk down the street, towards the huge archaeological building that she planned to infiltrate. They had an artefact that she was interested in - one that was rumoured to show the future. Athena wasn't one for superstition, but her curiosity was getting the better of her and she couldn't resist trying to find out for herself. Exactly on cue, an explosion in the distance sent all the guards & police running in that direction. The panic that ensued was enough to get Athena through the door. Nobody would be hurt - the explosion wasn't actually dangerous in any way, it was more a sound effect and light show. She would never put anyone in deliberate danger.
From that point onwards, the rest was easy. she got the artefact and was almost at the door when she heard the shouting behind her.
"HEY! YOU! STOP RIGHT THERE!"
A rush of adrenaline ran through Athena and she began to run back towards the TARDIS, the "future-seeing" ball firmly in her arms. A smirk spread across her features as the authorities chased her along the streets. She slammed against her TARDIS and fumbled with the lock, getting in and slamming the door shut behind her just as her pursuers rounded the corner. She rushed up to the console, laughter tearing from her lips as she pulled the lever to dematerialize and watched their faces on the camera as they watched what appeared to be a shoe shop disappear into thin air.
